Letter From the Editor
“Star Trek” hasn’t lost its appeal over time. It’s just as entertaining now as it was when it first aired. It’s not because of the effects or visuals, but simply because it’s a thought out, well written show. Speaking as an artist who spends hours trying to make a piece of paper look pretty, it puts things in perspective to see Star Trek’s representation of how it’s the thought that matters. I believe creativity is a highly underrated quality. Creativity is what has kept humans alive, it’s what all of our favourite things came from. A creative mind. We’re taught to keep our minds from wandering, that daydreaming is pointless. Star Trek challenges that idea. With the show’s never before seen technology, the social norms being different, it seemed silly at the time. But now, a lot of their made up technology is similar to what we have now, an example could be communicators and cellphones. Women and people of colour are being treated more fairly now as well, just like on the show. All thanks to thinking outside of the box. TV and film are everywhere, yet there has been nothing quite like Star Trek. Its uniqueness could be a strong factor in the show’s success because it was so new and so different. Sci-fi is a growing genre, becoming more and more popular, but nothing could compare to the comforting, original, and lovable feeling that comes when watching Star Trek.
I’m a Star Trek fan because my mother introduced me, and you can be certain that my kids will grow up thinking logically like Spock and having a heart like Kirk’s. Star Trek will not be forgotten for a while yet, I’ll make sure of that, it’s a Trekkers Prime Directive. Star Trek is for everyone, big or small, young or old, boy or girl. No matter who you are, I think everyone has wanted to go to space at some point in their life. If not, have at least wondered what could be out there in the vast darkness of outer space.
